Abstract
During the last 25 years, the Russian legislator has completely redesigned its entire legal system. Most laws are now based on the continental European model and comply with modern standards. Special laws and regulations governing entrepreneurial activity and foreign investment were gradually superseded by universal laws, in particular the big codifications of the 2000s. The legal framework has therefore been improved significantly compared to the Soviet era and to the economic and legal provisions of the transition period. As part of a major civil law reform that began in 2008, significant improvements and finetunings were effected recently. The adaptation of the law of obligations and civil procedure laws to international practice is a major step forward, as it facilitates civil law transactions and the settlement of disputes arising thereof. It is yet to be seen how the new rules will actually be applied and interpreted in practice, the decisive word being left to the Russian courts.
