Abstract
Research has unveiled prominent mechanisms such as proximity and past interactions (repeated ties) as drivers of tie formation. However, accounting for a dynamic nature of networks, scholars have been flagging dynamics of network change as important field of research. Accordingly, we investigate how the importance of repetition and geographical proximity change over time. To this end, we collected data from various sources to raise a sample of more than 10,000 chartering and sales deals closed between counterparties providing vessels to others, in need of thereof, in the container shipping industry from 2000 to 2018. We further implement a quasi-experimental approach to compare the importance of mentioned mechanisms under conditions of increased uncertainty, such as before and after the financial crisis of 2008. We find that repeated ties are increasingly important under uncertainty.
