Abstract
This paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of changes in career aspirations from both micro and macro perspectives. Building on theories and empirical findings grounded in sociology, psychology, and economics, we develop hypotheses on cohort differences in, age-related changes of, and contextual effects on the desire for security and stability, a core career-related aspiration. Using data from two graduate cohorts of the Vienna Career Panel Project (ViCaPP), we find support for the hypothesized cohort and age effects as well as, based on an approach different from the one taken for initial hypothesis development and data analysis, tentative evidence for effects of the macro-economic context.
