Abstract
In my Ph.D. thesis I provide a comprehensive empirical analysis of the macro-economic consequences of inequality in the educational distribution. I construct a new dataset of inequality measures of educational attainment by age groups and sex for a global sample of countries during the period 1960-2010. Incorporating the demographic dimension into the analysis of educational inequality enables to investigate global differences in education expansion trajectories with respect to the distribution of education within and across age groups and sexes respectively. I use the obtained measures in order to assess the growth effects of age-group specific educational inequality and aggregate intergenerational educational mobility. Moreover, in a panel-regression framework, I provide evidence which adds to solve the puzzle that large reductions in educational inequality have not been accompanied by similar reductions in income inequality.
