Abstract
The phenomenon of responsible leadership is manifold. However, the study of responsible leadership is mostly limited to Western, advanced-economy perspectives and little is known about responsible leadership from the viewpoint of fast-growing, emerging economies. Based on the emerging-economy setting of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries and through comparative institutional analysis with a pragmatic constructivist lens, this paper aims to capture leadership approaches relevant within each of the four emerging economies as well as the respective development of corporate social responsibility (CSR). These analyses serve to derive in which ways the notion of responsible leadership is relevant in the emerging-economy setting and what constitutes responsible leadership from the viewpoint of each of the four BRIC countries. Aiming to contribute to extant responsible leadership research, the findings of these analyses are a first attempt to grasp responsible leadership from indigenous emerging-economy perspectives in order to outline a number of factors which can help explain responsible leadership.
