Quotation Vandor, Peter. 2009. The bond between international mobility and entrepreneurship: examining the role of personality. Academy of Management Conference, Chicago, Vereinigte Staaten/USA, 10.08.-11.08.

International mobility and entrepreneurship often represent connected behaviors – most prominently visible in phenomena such as immigrant entrepreneurship and the so called “brain drain” of qualified entrepreneurs. But why? The paper examines a new explanation for this connection: an underlying pre-disposition for both mobility and entrepreneurship, provided by certain personality traits, such as the willingness to take risk or the need for achievement. I argue that the occurrence of certain personality traits encourages both entrepreneurship and mobility, which helps explaining why mobile persons are often more often willing to choose a found a business than others, and vice versa. The paper presents an exploratory study which examines the career plans and preparatory measures of over 1,800 graduate students from four universities in Austria and Slovakia. The data shows that students who intend to relocate internationally in the first 5 years after their graduation also display higher entrepreneurial intentions than others. At the same time, students with high ambitions to relocate internationally are more interested in starting companies than those who intend to stay at the place of their studies. From the 6 personality traitconstructs tested in the survey, especially willingness to take risk seems to explain this effect through its significant positive effect on both the intentions to found a company as well as to relocate internationally.
