Little is known about wage formation and the wage structure in NPOs. In my dissertation, I will therefore analyse the wage structure in the nonprofit sector. I explore whether the characteristics of nonprofit organisations affect the wage level and the wage dispersion in NPOs. NPOs differ from forprofit organisations due to both their non-distribution constraint and their voluntariness. Interestingly, while many researchers find the non-distribution constraint of NPOs to be an important feature for the analysis of wages in that sector, the second characteristic of NPOs, namely the organisation being voluntary to some meaningful extent, has widely been neglected in the modelling of wages in the nonprofit sector. The focus of the dissertation lies therefore on the relationship between wages and the voluntariness of an NPO. Various studies have been undertaken to analyse the wage level in the nonprofit sector. Most often, previous work compares wages of nonprofit and for-profit workers, either economy-wide or in specific areas such as child care or elderly care. The results of these comparative studies heavily depend on the set of control variables that are included in the wage equation. Few studies exist which examine nonprofit wages on the basis of linked employer-employee data which combine both data categories in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of wage determination (Borjas, Frech, & Ginsburg, 1983; Holtmann & Idson, 1993; Mocan & Tekin, 2003; Noguchi & Shimizutani, 2007).
