Quotation Rainer, Franz. 2021. I suffissi -AROLO e -ARELLO e il problema del interfisso -AR- nelle lingue romanze. Revue de Linguistique Romane. 85 447-506.

This article deals with the origin an development of the two Italian suffixes -arolo and -arello, as well as their Romance cognates. It appears that a full understanding of these matters can only be gained by including the Italian dialects and pan-Romance evidence. It is shown that the origin of the 'interfix' -ar- is different in each case: while -arolo arose out of a suffix chain, the origin of -arello was due to other mechanisms by which 'interfixes' can come about or be extended to new contexts.
