Abstract
This paper studies determinants of the voluntary provision of user-generated (online) content. Using data from the largest fan fiction website, we find that users respond more strongly to high-quality community feedback (reviews) than to low-quality community feedback (followers). Moreover, regression analyses based on the 150 most targeted original works indicate that bestsellers, series and books with film adaptations trigger more contributions, whereas fan fiction texts related to books written by female authors are, on balance, more extensive. Finally, we provide first evidence on users' reactions to the release of a new material (books, films).
